Have you heard your teen talking about “Group 7” lately?
Don’t worry—it’s nothing to fret about. Group 7 is yet another silly and harmless trend that teens are obsessed with. Here’s what you need to know about the Group 7 slang meaning, and why it’s suddenly everywhere.
How did Group 7 start?
It all began with Sophia James, a 26-year-old indie musician from Los Angeles. Earlier this month, she posted a series of seven TikToks to promote her new single.
According to James, posting the series was a bid to get more engagement. In her seventh TikTok, she said, “If you’re watching this video, you are in group seven.”
She continues, “I have posted seven videos tonight and this is the seventh one, just as a little science experiment to see what… kind of video gets the most reach. I don’t know what that says about you, but you’re in group seven.”
It worked. As of today, her seventh TikTok has 54.4 million views.
So what is Group 7, exactly?
What does being in Group 7 mean? Exactly what it sounds like: the TikTok users that only came across James’ seventh TikTok.
“For some reason, the Group 7 video came into contact with very playful people who were commenting very sweet and silly things… people who commit to the bit. I think that is hilarious,” James told USA Today.
TikTok has taken a very niche viral moment and ran with it. TikToks that have nothing to do with the trend often have commenters saying things like “classic Group 7 behavior” or “feels good to be in Group 7 right now.”
The TikTok trend has even caught the attention of major celebrities: Malala Yousafzai jumped on the Group 7 bandwagon to promote her new book; singer and actor Ben Barnes used the trend to promote his new Christmas single; the Kansas City Chiefs even jumped in on the trend.
Do parents need to be worried?
Not at all. Group 7 is just the latest harmless trend to take over TikTok. It’s basically a very silly inside joke amongst TikTok users and isn’t something that’s tied to risky or inappropriate behavior.
So there’s no reason to sweat about this one, parents. Next time you hear your kids reference Group 7, you can just roll your eyes and move on.
