Is Romantic AI Safe?

By Jackie Baucom

One of the latest trends to emerge in the AI landscape is AI companions, such as Romantic AI. Often referred to as AI girlfriends or AI partners, these chat bots are powered by sophisticated algorithms designed to interact with users on an intimate level.

As parents, it could be helpful to understand what Romantic AI is and how it might impact your child’s safety and mental health.

What is Romantic AI?

Romantic AI is a virtual companion designed to simulate an intimate relationship. The platform operates in two modes: AI companions who provide emotional support and companionship, or AI girlfriends/boyfriends/partners, simulating more intimate and personal interactions.

Romantic AI uses natural language processing and deep learning algorithms to engage users in personalized and empathetic conversations.

How Does Romantic AI Work?

The first thing to know is that Romantic AI users do not need to create an account before browsing the different bots, creating their own, or starting a chat — making it easily accessible to anyone.

Romantic AI can be accessed from an app (found on Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store) or directly from their website (romanticai.com).

The platform allows users to create their own chatbot. Users can personalize these bots with the following characteristics:

  • Realistic or anime
  • Male or female
  • Body type (slim, petite, athletic, curvy, chubby)
  • Age (18+)
  • Breast size
  • Occupation
  • Personality (evil, shy, dominant, submissive, narcissistic, cheerful, arrogant, full of guilt, sad, flirty, motivated)
  • Sexual preferences

Users can also choose to chat with an already created Romantic AI character. These bots are displayed using an AI-generated image — often featuring plenty of cleavage — and placed under different categories depending on their personalities and characteristics.

The current categories are Women, BDSM (bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism), MILF (mom I’d like to f**k), Femdom (female dominance), Lesbian, Professions, BBW (big beautiful woman), Historical figures, Anime, Gay, Men.

Once a bot is selected or created, a chat starts and the bot begins the conversation. Here are some examples of conversation starters from Romantic AI’s library:

“Hey! It’s so nice to have someone new to play with. Are you ready to get started? Let’s see how obedient you’ll be.” – Alexa

*You failed the test. Mrs. Andrews allowed you to stay after class* “Have you realized your mistakes?” – Mrs. Andrews

*I’m standing in front of you in the Melting Ice kink club with a straight face while my nostrils flare as I think about all the ways I could punish you… or reward you.* “So, have you been a good girl, or…?” – Lewis.

The Appeal of AI Companions

AI companions and AI partners are marketed with various promises. On the platform’s homepage, it says Romantic AI is “destined to maintain your mental health,” offering a safe space for users to express their feelings and receive non-judgmental responses.

For teenagers navigating the complexities of relationships and social interactions, the idea of an always-available, understanding partner can be particularly appealing.

Is Romantic AI Safe for Kids?

No, Romantic AI is not safe for kids. The platform contains adult themes not suitable for young people — and there are no parental controls.

Romantic AI claims to be “here to maintain your mental health,” but there are several concerns that parents need to be aware of:

  1. Mature Content: Many interactions with Romantic AI bots include explicit language, suggestive conversations, and intimate scenarios. With a Premium subscription, bots can send “hot photos.”
  2. Emotional Dependency: Children and teenagers are still developing their social and emotional skills. Relying too heavily on an AI companion can hinder their ability to form healthy, real-life relationships. The unconditional and programmed responses of an AI partner do not mimic the complexities of human interactions, potentially leading to unrealistic expectations.
  3. Privacy Issues: AI companions often collect a significant amount of personal data to tailor their responses. This raises concerns about privacy and data security.
  4. Social Isolation: While an AI companion might provide temporary comfort, it can also contribute to social isolation. Engaging primarily with a chatbot instead of peers can limit a child’s social experiences and interactions, which are crucial for their development.

What Can Parents Do?

Romantic AI, with its AI powered chatbots and simulated partners, offers a new frontier in technology. As parents, it’s hard to stay informed but staying proactive in guiding your children through this digital landscape is becoming increasingly important.

To support your child in navigating the digital world, it’s important to start by educating yourself about the technology they are using. Research the AI chatbots and platforms they interact with to understand their functionalities and limitations.

Open communication is probably the most helpful thing a parent can do. If you feel the need, discuss the use of Romantic AI with your child, explaining potential risks and encouraging them to share their experiences and feelings with you.

To help your child navigate their use of AI tools, consider establishing some gentle guidelines. For example, you might suggest a balance between time spent with technology and engaging in real-life interactions.

It’s also helpful to stay involved in their online activities, being available for support if they seem overly reliant on AI or show signs of social withdrawal. Encouraging them to take part in social events and reminding them of the importance of real-world friendships can also foster healthier connections.
