What Does “Chad” Mean?

By Robert Milligan

In internet slang, a Chad is typically a confident, attractive, muscular, outgoing guy who easily gets attention — especially from women. Think: high school quarterback, perfect jawline, naturally cool energy.

That’s the basic definition. But there’s more nuance depending on how — and where — it’s being used.

Is Being Called a “Chad” a Good Thing?

Sometimes, yes. Sometimes, no. Here’s how it plays out:

  • Compliment: “He handled that like a total Chad.”
➝ Confident, unbothered, cool under pressure.
  • Sarcasm: “Wow, okay Chad.”
➝ Used ironically to mock someone for showing off or being overly confident.
  • Critique: In some corners of the internet, “Chad” represents the shallow ideal of masculinity — good-looking but not deep, successful but maybe not kind. It can be used to criticize toxic standards for men.

Where Did the Term Come From?

The term Chad started as a stereotypical name for a preppy or popular guy. But it really exploded on message boards like 4chan and Reddit, where it became a character in memes that exaggerated social roles:

  • “Chad vs. Virgin” memes: These side-by-side comics compared an awkward “Virgin” character with a confident “Chad,” exaggerating everything from posture to personality.
  • Over time, Chad became shorthand for hyper-masculine ideal — sometimes admired, sometimes mocked.

Is “Chad” Connected to Other Online Terms?

Yes. It’s part of a larger internet language around masculinity:

  • Alpha/Sigma male: These terms rate men based on confidence, dominance, or independence. A Chad is usually an “alpha.”
  • Incel: Short for “involuntarily celibate.” In some communities, incels resent “Chads” for having social and romantic success they feel excluded from.

Most teens using “Chad” today aren’t involved in incel forums, but it’s helpful to know the history. Some of the roots come from toxic online spaces.

Should Parents Be Concerned?

The word itself isn’t dangerous — but the mindset behind it can be. If your child is joking about someone being a “Chad,” it might just be playful teasing. But if you’re seeing a pattern of:

  • Obsession with “alpha” behavior
  • Mocking emotional vulnerability
  • Negative views of girls or other boys

… it’s worth opening a conversation. Ask what they mean by “Chad” and how they feel about it. Some kids are just parroting memes. Others might be absorbing ideas that aren’t healthy.

How to Talk with Your Child About It

Instead of jumping straight to “Don’t say that,” try:

  • “Hey, I heard you say someone was a Chad — what does that mean to you?”
  • “Do your friends use that word? Is it usually a joke or serious?”
  • “What kind of guy do you think actually deserves respect?”

These open-ended questions can spark conversations about confidence, character, and the kind of person they want to be — beyond labels.
