Nokia may not have really known what they were starting when they added Snake — what is widely considered the first mobile app — to their mobile phones in 1997. Now, over thirty years later, there are nearly 9 million apps available for download.
Apps are here to stay, but a lot has changed since Snake was the most interesting thing to do on our phones.
Apps are such an integral part of the smartphone experience that in many ways they are the experience. So, as a company dedicated to listening to the needs of families, it’s probably no surprise that we get a lot of feedback and requests (see comments below) about the apps we create and the 3rd-party apps we allow on our devices.
Below you can find the most recent updates to Gabb’s app options. We’re also big proponents of taking tech in steps, so you can find an explanation of our different app categories. This should help you better understand how you can use our tools to provide a tailored tech experience that helps your kid get the right amount of tech at the right time.
The Newest Apps Available on Gabb Devices
Technology changes quickly and we work hard to stay up to date. Check back here regularly to see updates on the newest apps available on Gabb devices.
Essential Apps and Parent-Enabled Apps
Essential apps come preloaded on Gabb devices, while others need to be enabled from the parent’s Gabb account. The exact list varies by the device but apps in this category include staples like calculator, camera, and calendar apps, as well as Gabb-engineered apps that make Gabb devices uniquely safe.
Please note, some essential apps (e.g. Gabb Music) may require an additional subscription to be used on the device, depending on your Gabb phone plan.

Gabb Reviewed Apps
In addition to essential apps, Gabb phone customers on an Advanced Plan have the option of downloading Parent-enabled Apps (3rd-party apps reviewed by Gabb) from the Gabb App Store. Every app in this category has been reviewed by Gabb, and any risk has been identified and listed on the Gabb App Guide. High-risk apps and social media apps are not made available.
Third-party apps are not included on Gabb devices by default, so they need to be added to a child’s device by a parent (through My Account). This category includes a broader range of apps that not all users will need, but that many parents have asked for because their child is ready for them.
We encourage parents to take a thoughtful approach by considering your child’s individual maturity level when deciding what apps to download as every 3rd-party app comes with its own functionality and inherent risks. We’ve provided a thorough review of each app in our Gabb App Guide to help you when making choices for your family.
Gabb Reviewed Apps were launched Fall 2023 along with the Gabb Phone 3 Pro. At the time of launch, nearly 100 apps were made available. By Summer 2024 the number has grown to more than 300.
Gabb Reviewed Apps are divided into fifteen separate categories. Below are some of the most popular apps in each category to give you a quick overview. To see an up-to-date list of all 3rd-party apps available, check out the Gabb App Guide.

- Choose which apps you want to enable and click “add.”
- Ensure your child’s device is connected to WiFi, open the GabbID app on their device, sign in (if you are not already), and select “Check Updates.” This will begin the app download.
