What is Chai AI? And Is It Safe For Kids?

Now, an app called Chai AI is making waves by offering a fresh take on interactive chatting. 

But with any new technology — especially one that children might use — it’s important to understand its features and safety measures. So, what exactly is Chai AI, and is it a safe choice for your kids?

What is Chai AI?

Chai AI is a conversational app that uses artificial intelligence to interact with users through text-based conversations. Users can download the app from the Chai AI website (www.chai.ml), or an app store. Once downloaded they can create an account and start chatting with AI friends.

It’s designed to simulate human-like conversations, providing users with a personalized and engaging chatting experience. 

Users can interact with or create their own AI characters, each with its own personality and style. All conversations are different and can be tailored to the user’s interests and needs. 

What AI Powers Chai?

Chai AI operates on its own proprietary LLM (large language model).

The AI technology behind Chai is similar to other conversational models but is fine-tuned to create distinct and interactive characters. This ensures that conversations are not only coherent but also tailored to the character’s unique traits, enhancing the overall user experience.

Why is Chai Better Than Character AI?

Chai AI distinguishes itself from other AI chatbots like Character AI in several ways. Chai focuses on offering a wide range of customizable characters, allowing users to choose or create characters that best fit their interests. This customization can lead to more engaging and enjoyable conversations.

The app does have ads which pop-up at random intervals in both the free and paid versions.

Can Chai AI See Your Messages? Is Chai AI Private?

Chai AI operates under privacy policies that are designed to protect user information. While the Chai app itself processes messages to facilitate conversation, it claims to be committed to user privacy and data security. 

Previously, bot creators were able to see users’ messages, but the names were anonymous. Chai AI removed this feature months ago and claims messages are not seen anymore, though Chai AI developers can access them for training purposes. 

In Chai AI’s Privacy Notice, the company is transparent about collecting personal information such as names, email addresses, social media login data, device information, and location. 

While Chai AI, like many platforms, has policies in place designed to safeguard user privacy, there have been no credible reports of privacy breaches to date. However, it’s important to approach with caution. The tech landscape is littered with instances where platforms, despite having privacy policies, have misled users about the extent of data collection and its uses. 

Does Chai AI Allow NSFW?

Chai AI initially prided itself on being uncensored and allowing for all types of conversations, including NSFW (Not Safe For Work) content. In 2023, Chai AI came out with the option for users to enable/disable NSFW content through the app’s settings. Many were angry with this new feature, as they used the app primarily for ERP (Erotic Role Play).

Parents should remain cautious even with NSFW content disabled. Filters are not always reliable and inappropriate conversations can still happen. 

Is Chai AI Safe?

Chai AI is not safe for kids. The app is designed for those 18 and older. 

Chai AI has moderation tools and privacy settings to help ensure that conversations remain appropriate and that user data is protected. However, filters and moderation are not always effective.

Parents can continue to be proactive in educating their children about safe tech, online safety, monitoring their apps, and discussing any concerns that arise.
