Is RedNote Safe for Kids? Or Just a TikTok Alternative?

By Ray Norton

RedNote, or Xiaohongshu, is a Chinese social media app launched in 2013 that translates to “Little Red Book.” Despite being around for over ten years, it recently skyrocketed in popularity as an alternative to TikTok with the potential ban of TikTok drawing near.

Here’s what parents need to know.

What is RedNote?

RedNote was originally created in China and is managed by a China-based parent company called Xingin Information Technology. Known for its short-form video content and focus on user interests rather than influencer-driven algorithms, RedNote is often compared to TikTok.

However, it differs in its primary use case — sharing tips on fashion, travel, and lifestyle. The app’s popularity has skyrocketed in January 2025, hitting over 300 million users globally and climbing to the top of the Apple App Store and Google Play rankings.

The sudden influx of American users, being called “TikTok refugees” by many, comes as the US government weighs national security concerns over apps with China-based parent companies like ByteDance, (owner of TikTok).

While RedNote’s parent company is not ByteDance, concerns about user data privacy and potential sharing of data with third-party entities remain central to the conversation.

Why Are Kids Flocking to RedNote?

For many young users, RedNote feels like a fresh start. Its user-friendly interface, combined with a focus on niche content rather than celebrity culture, appeals to teenagers looking to escape the heavily saturated influencer trends dominating other platforms.

Additionally, the app’s community-driven vibe — with users sharing tutorials and engaging in international conversations — creates a space that feels both inclusive and exciting.

The app’s rapid growth was catalyzed by the looming TikTok ban in the US. Many kids who loved TikTok’s short-form video format found RedNote to be a similar platform, sparking its rise as one of the fastest-growing apps on app store platforms.

Safety Concerns for Parents

Despite its appeal, RedNote raises some serious questions:

1. User Data Privacy

Like other Chinese social media apps, concerns about data privacy are paramount. RedNote’s policies on sharing user data with third-party entities are not as transparent as many would hope, raising fears about potential misuse of personal information.

2. Censorship and Content Control

As the platform operates under Chinese regulations, there are concerns about censorship and the app’s potential to restrict free expression. While this might mean less exposure to harmful content for kids, it also raises questions about the integrity of the information they encounter.

3. National Security Implications

Discussions about apps like TikTok and RedNote often center on national security. The Supreme Court’s deliberations and President Joe Biden’s stance emphasize potential risks of data collection by apps linked to China-based parent companies.

4. Exposure to Inappropriate Content

While RedNote focuses on niche interests, parents should be cautious about the possibility of their kids encountering age-inappropriate or misleading content through user-generated posts.

5. Online Predators

As with any social media platform, there is always a risk of predatory behavior. Parents should be mindful of who can interact with their children and teach them how to recognize and report suspicious activity.

6. Addictive Usage Patterns

Like TikTok, RedNote’s algorithm is designed to keep users engaged for extended periods. This could lead to overuse and negatively impact your child’s mental health, sleep, or productivity.

What Can Parents Do? 4 Tips

To ensure your kids use RedNote safely:

1. Understand the App

Download RedNote yourself and explore its features. Familiarizing yourself with how the app works will help you identify potential risks.

2. Set Privacy Settings

Encourage your kids to adjust their privacy settings to restrict who can see their content and interact with them.

3. Monitor Usage

Talk openly about online safety and set limits on screen time to ensure your child’s online activity remains balanced.

4. Stay Informed

Keep an eye on updates regarding RedNote’s privacy policies and any developments related to national security concerns.

Staying Safe Online

As the social media landscape continues to evolve, RedNote’s rise highlights the shifting dynamics of global connectivity. While the app provides a platform for creativity and cultural exchange, concerns about user data, third-party sharing, and national security cannot be overlooked. Parents should stay proactive in understanding the apps their children use, consider kid-safe devices that provide a gradual introduction to the digital world, and foster open conversations about online safety.
