The door-kicking challenge.
The whole house shook and a deafening boom sounded at the front of our house. When we ran to investigate, we saw our front door had been kicked in, splintered off the frame! We saw a group of teenagers running to their getaway car, shrieking and whooping in triumph.
When we contacted the police, they informed us that we had become victims of a TikTok “Door kicking challenge.” Here’s where things got interesting. Because the cost to replace the door exceeded $5,000, these kids had committed a felony. All from accessing a social platform that feeds kids these dangerous ideas.
The next day, after the perpetrators had been identified and called into the police station, we were chatting with our children about the consequences of TikTok challenges. My teenage son said something I never thought I would hear. “Mom, I’m so glad I have a Gabb phone. If I had social media, I would be doing stupid stuff like this for sure.” My jaw dropped. Understandably, our son has wanted a smartphone like most of his peers, but we’ve held out because we just couldn’t see giving him access to social media quite yet. For years he’d been telling us, “You’re ruining my life!”, but in this moment, he realized we had been protecting him.
When I tell friends and family, they’ve looked into Gabb, and decided it’s the best choice for their kids as well. It makes parenting a lot easier when we all decided to get Gabb for our kids.
Thank you Gabb for giving my family a way for our kids to have a phone, but be protected from social media. Someday our kids will be ready to handle it, but while they’re in these formative years, Gabb is the best solution.
